The Crucible: An Autobiography by Colonel Yay, Filipina American Guerrilla
In this 1950 memoir, "The Crucible: An Autobiography by Colonel Yay, Filipina American Guerrilla, " Panlilio narrates her experience as a journalist, triple agent, leader in the Philippine resistance against the Japanese, and lover of the guerrilla general Marcos V. Augustin, from the war-torn streets of Japanese-occupied Manila, to battlegrounds in the countryside, and the rural farmlands of central California. Denise Cruz's introduction imparts key biographical, historical, and cultural contexts.

Why I'm Like This: True Stories

Why I'm Like This: True Stories

Why I'm Like This: True Stories
This book is well written, funny and a quick read. It's the kind of book you can take on a plane and finish it (even with interruptions) on a cross-country flight, and the person sitting next to you either sneaks peeks or asks you if it's good when he finds you smiling or even chuckling. Or, if your husband is on the other side of you, you set the book on his tray table and say, "read this passage!" knowing fully well it will crack him up. I particularly appreciated the author's honesty and her willingness to share these stories. I feel it took courage to do so. Bravo Ms. Kaplan, and thanks for the laughs. What's next?

Angry Rain : A Brief Memoir

Angry Rain : A Brief Memoir

Reveals the development of Maurice Kenny’s growing artistic consciousness, while attesting to both the beauty and brutality of the world in which he lived.
Maurice Kenny’s career as a writer, teacher, publisher, and storyteller spanned more than six decades, during which he published over thirty books and became one of the most prominent voices in American poetry. From the early 1970s onward, he was instrumental in the resurgence of Native American literature through both his celebrated volumes of poetry, such as I Am the Sun and the award-winning The Mama Poems, and his work as an editor and publisher.
Angry Rain, his bittersweet memoir, reveals this rich literary life by recounting its tumultuous “first half…plus a bit,” a time during which he moved through a series of worlds that all left their marks on him. Kenny begins with his early years spent among his family in the small northern New York city of Watertown and continues through an adolescence marked by both significant awakenings and grievous traumas. Determined, Kenny sets out to seek his fortunes and find his poetic voice, landing in the Jim Crow-era South, in St. Louis, in Indiana, and finally in New York City, where he becomes part of a motley creative group of performers and poets that offers both fascinating inspiration and disheartening rejection. These recollections end with Kenny’s maturation into a poet whose reaffirmed indigenous heritage unified an artistic vision that remained in conversation with a wide range of other themes and traditions until his death in 2016.
Maurice Kenny (1929–2016) was a Writer-in-Residence Emeritus at the State University of New York at Potsdam and the author of many books, including Tekonwatonti/Molly Brant: Poems of War. He was inducted into the New York State Writers’ Hall of Fame in 2014.

Setting the Desert on Fire: T. E. Lawrence and Britain's Secret War in Arabia, 1916-1918

Setting the Desert on Fire: T. E. Lawrence and Britain's Secret War in Arabia, 1916-1918

Setting the Desert on Fire: T. E. Lawrence and Britain's Secret War in Arabia, 1916-1918
Well worth the read for several reasons: Gives the reader a better perspective of the extremely complex situation. Includes information from the German side I have not seen before. Provides information on the present state of many historic sites. I would like to see more from the Turk and German side in any future attempts to deal with this. I assume that angle has been written but never published widely in English.
Chapter 19 on the Dera episode is perhaps somewhat unkind. Of course one cannot not be perfectly clear on the single missing page in Lawrence's diary. I would have like to have seen photos of the adjacent pages, a mention of the possibility that Mrs. Shaw may have removed it, a mention of evidence going against the author's theory (in that there is a statement of a military doctor who treated Lawrence soon after the Dera incident and there are statements by other colleagues saying that they did not question that the event did in fact occur and why).
One never is able to chose the order of their books, but this book is best savored after reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1922 Oxford Edition), Safety Last, and Orientations. Better to read the word of TEL's fellow officers before taking on the modern perspective.
The author obviously loves his subject and has done his work extremely well.
